Are you a day or night eater?
if you answered 'night' then there is a good chance you can shortcut the whole weight loss journey.
Just why is it that we can be as good as gold all day, politely refusing that chocolate bar, bravely avoiding temptation with a smile only to find we have no resistance to those tasty fattening snacks when the sun goes down? Suddenly that high calorie food we so easily resisted becomes overpowering, we don't casre about the calories. "I've been good all day, why shouldn't I treat myself" we say, knowing we shouldn't but doing it anyway. Sound familiar?
There are some very good reasons for our behaviour and knowing them can help you to understand the cravings and therefore avoid them.
A long time ago when people were thin and jogging hadn't been invented. There were many other things which were yet to be discovered - electricity being one. The sun went down and food preparation became difficult if not downright hazardous. No TV no fridge - just early nights. Then everything changed. Now the kitchen is the most brightly lit room in the house, and when you open the refridgerator it is even brighter. Very reassuring, very comforting . Food prep is a breeze, snacks are simple - it's so easy now. Unfortunately, our metabolism slows at night and most of the calories we consume turn to fat. Every calorie consumed in the evening is worth twice as much as a day time calorie. Think about that and you soon realize why it has been so hard to shift the weight.
So, try a new approach. Eat sensibly during the day ( Please don't crazy eat. It's just a few hours without eating not a trek over the Himalayas), and make your last meal as early as possible like no later than 7 or 7.30 (6-6.30 is preferable). Then stop..........................has panic set in yet. Don't worry your body will love you for this. Not only will you lose weight but you will sleep like never before (try going to bed earlier, on the basis that breakfast will come round sooner). After an initial adjustment you will wake feeling better (because your body will be able to rest without having to continue digesting food at the same time). If you are late getting home or your dinner is prepared later than the deadline then tough! NO food for you. You missed it - too bad. Stick with it. No excuses.
People have told me that the thing that surprised them the most was waking up and not feeling starved! Hungry - yes but not ravenous as you might expect.
I'm not saying this is a breeze or that you won't feel hungry at night. I'm just saying give it a try. One tip which I suppose some people would say is wrong but I don't care - If you feel really hungry have a low fat food like a yoghurt just before going to bed (No fruit please - or it will ferment in your stomach overnight yuk!). It will help you to sleep and the cost in calories is minimal. It will also raise your serotonin levels which helps sleep. One last thing - take the lightbulb out of the refridgerator.
